To Ostend

Early on 27 June, Maurice arrived in abandoned Oudenburg. The village and castle were ruined, and although the fort was large and well maintained, it lacked a moat. It was important nevertheless, because it guarded the bridge connecting Ostend with Bruges across the river Ieperlee. Maurice ordered it occupied by Piron’s seven companies and the squadrons Espinoy and Wel, with two guns and supplies for eight days. Piron was to close the road and daily scout towards Bruges: eight days had passed since the fleet had set sail, so an enemy army could be expected from now on. Major Bruges received the same orders for Fort Bredene and Plassendale, to the north. He had to close the road to Blankenberge with his own company and four from Solms’ command (Hallart, Gilson, Kessel, and, probably because they were new to the army and still undrilled, Bernard), plus squadron Dubois. Maurice then ordered Solms and the cavalry regiments of Solms and Balen to continue on to Fort Albert, south of Ostend. It still had a Royalist garrison. So had the other forts, Elizabeth, St Claire and St Columban, but because those were surrounded by inundations and marshes, they were bypassed. Fort Albert, however, needed to be taken to create a safe corridor between Ostend and Nieuwpoort. Located in the dunes, it guarded the sluices to control inundations south of the city. The rest of the army camped with Maurice around Oudenburg. He had all the wagons offloaded and sent to Ostend to fetch fresh bread and beer brought by the fleet.
